Buffer is very widely used today and all livestock industries are involved in its use in some way.
Animal buffer is a weak acid and its salt or a strong acid and its salt. Buffers help the rumen resist acidity changes when feeding high-concentrate diets. Also, buffer reduces the percentage of acidity, increases the ratio of acetate to propionate and improves fiber digestion. Therefore, this action causes increase in feed consumption and subsequently, increase in milk production as well as milk fat. First-class buffers prevent the increase of positive structure, but do not raise the acidity above a certain limit.
